March 14, 2022 NEEDLEPOINT 101

I feel Needlepoint is one of the easiest hobbies you can do. For the first pne - pick out something you really like and would enjoy doing. We talked about canvases and threads last time. You can go to eBay, Esty or Mercari and get a kit from Bucilla or Dimensions and start with that. Or possiblt start with a bookmark, a dog collar or even a belt are good first-time projects.

All needlepoint is just a stitch going from bottom left to top right, called a diagonal stitch. It is as easy as thinking of going up one and over one.  Look at the diagram attached. You must make sure all your stitches are going in the same direction. As you get more proficient in stitching there are more complex stitches you can experiment with. For this first project " Keep It Simple " I start my needlepoint in the upper right-hand corner when I first started to stitch. Every stitcher is different Some start in the left-hand corner. At this point in my stitching life - I start by colors or sometimes I try to do the background first since it is all usually one-color thread.

As long as all your stitches go from bottom left to top right - you are doing a fine job. Be proud of your first canvas, It will only get easier from here on. Remember there are no needlepoint officers to tell you are doing wrong. Needlepoint is at your own pace.  You are covering the canvas with the appropriate thread bottom left to upper right.

I hope you are enjoying your first stitch It will the most common one you use. You can use 3 strands per stitch or 4 or 5 or 6. The different number of strands give depth to your work

Happy Stitching

Until tomorrow...
